David LaChapelle is a renowned American photographer and video artist. His contemporary artwork is hyper-real, highly saturated, and almost always controversial. Did you know? LaChapelle first enrolled in a painting course before experimenting with photography.
After moving to New York City at age 17, LaChapelle was spotted by Andy Warhol, who hired him to work at Interview Magazine. From then on, David LaChapelle was a photographer, working for international magazines and traveling the world. Over the course of his prolific career, LaChapelle has captured iconic celebrity portraits of Paris Hilton, Lil Kim, Tupac, Britney Spears, Madonna, the Kardashians, and Naomi Campbell. In addition to shooting for famous publications, LaChapelle has maintained a fine-art photography practice. Much of his work involves themes of mortality with Surrealist references to art history and religious iconography, all while communicating social messages.
