Yayoi Kusama is one of the most influential contemporary artists of all time. The Japanese artist is known for transcending Pop Art and Minimalism with a body of work that explores sexuality, freedom, and her obsessive-compulsive disorder. Two main obsessions since childhood are seen in Yayoi Kusama's pumpkin and polka dot art, prints, sculptures and hypnotic installations.
Using accumulations and repetitive motifs of polka dots and infinity nets on various mediums, Kusama dives deep into her own hallucinations to examine psychological and sexual subjects and mental illness.
Interestingly, in 1977, Yayoi Kusama voluntarily checked herself into a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo, where she continues to live and work nearby today. Dive into the psychological and wonderful world of Yayoi Kusama at Moco Museum.
