Pride Amsterdam 2019
June might have kicked off Pride Month for our friends in the States, but across the globe, the celebrations continue! 27 July – 04 August, the Netherlands celebrates Pride with a program packed full of dates that will leave ALL filled with love!
Did you know the Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize gay marriage back in 2001? We stan a woke government!
What is the definition of Pride?
It literally means to have ‘deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s achievements’; and that is exactly what coming out is – an achievement! Pride marks a time for many LGBTQIA+ members to consider how much our forefathers and foremothers have paved the way. And that is precisely the hope with this year’s theme: “Remember the past, create the future.” Pride 2019 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the New York City Stonewall Riots in 1969. Joining the celebration is a political statement, so come out and show your support!

Arguably the highlight of the entire season! 165 canals set the scene as Amsterdam hosts its Pride Parade, which is actually a BOAT PARADE! Festivities kick off Saturday, 3 August (12:30 – 17:00), and for the logistic-minded peeps the route is as follows: Oosterdok – Nieuwe Herengracht – Amstel – Prinsengracht – Westerdok. Pick a spot and set up shop!
TGIF has long been a part of our weekly agendas. And on 2 August, Amsterdam will be littered with an assortment of crazy, sexy, cool street parties! Like Amstelveld, Rembrandtplein, Zeedijk, Reguliersdwarsstraat, Beursplein to name a few. And remember that in classic Dutch fashion, the canal parade on Saturday will start precisely on time! Ahem, set your alarm. Furthermore, if you want one last hurrah, the official closing party takes place at Dam Square (14:00-22:00).
What else to do during Pride?
If you’re looking to diversify your Party Agenda, come drop by Moco Museum on Museumplein! We’re a young museum making no qualms about being loud and PROUD. As it’s our motto: In art we trust; we uphold our belief in the power of art to connect people. We house a vibrant collection of modern and contemporary masters- there is something for everyone. And on that note, we want to honor and acknowledge the Pride Flag’s two, new color additions: brown (inclusivity) and black (diversity). Get your tickets online HERE!
